PIQC | Session 3 | Formative Years of Spanish Philippines, 1565-1665 | Panel B: Hispanic Way of Life and Muslim Mindanao

After the conquest of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, the greater colonial project began in earnest with thrusts by missionaries and military expeditions into the interior lands of the Philippines. The expansion of Colonial rule posed challenges to our pre-colonial ancestors as to how to adapt or preserve their way of life. This panel explores of how religion and indigenous expressions of spiritual belief played off one another during the first century of Spanish rule and how it affected the Indigenous Peoples and the Peoples of Muslim Mindanao.

The panel will have Dr. Ma. Eloisa De Castro and Prof. Regalado Trota Jose of the University of Santo Tomas, Dr. Grace Liza Concepcion of the University of Asia & the Pacific, and Dr. Isaac Donoso of the University of Alicante. Dr. Bernardita R. Churchill, President of the Philippine National Historical Society and Session Convener will introduce the panel and the session. Dr. Marcelino Macapinlac Jr. of the De La Salle University Manila will moderate the panel.

Session 3 is convened by the Philippine National Historical Society.
